Jamaican Personal Trainer Alexa Williams Urges Shift From Aesthetics to Functional Fitness
Attorney and Jamaican certified personal trainer Alexa Williams is calling for a shift in how people approach exercise, moving attention away from appearance alone toward what the body can do in everyday life.
Williams said much of gym culture centres on chasing a particular look, shape or size. While confidence matters, she argued that training should also prepare people for real demands such as balance, stability, rotational power and the ability to recover if they fall.
"Functional, for me, means the practical application of strength," Williams said. "I'm strong in one facet or in one element, but I need to be able to have that translate to real life."
She described functional fitness as a holistic approach, covering stability, core strength and upper and lower body work so that different muscle groups support one another.
During a morning television segment, Williams demonstrated three exercises that can be done at home with minimal equipment.
The first was a farmer's carry, using items such as dumbbells, water bottles or groceries. The movement involves walking in a straight line while keeping the head up, posture upright and core engaged. She recommended holding the position for about 30 to 45 seconds, or walking 10 steps forward and 10 steps back where space is limited.
The second exercise was a push-up, which targets the arms, chest and back. Williams advised keeping the body straight and preventing the hips from sagging. For those who find standard push-ups difficult, she recommended incline push-ups using a bench or table rather than knee variations, saying incline work better prepares people for full push-ups.
The third was a reverse lunge, which she said builds single-leg strength and stability that squats alone may not provide. The movement is a step back, lowering the knee and returning upright. People who need support can hold on to a stable surface until they gain confidence.
Williams, who also practises law, said her legal and fitness careers align through a client-focused approach and a desire to share practical guidance with others.
