Ahead of the 2026 World Cup, Jamaicans interviewed on the street offered a split picture of loyalties, with Brazil, Argentina, France and the Netherlands all drawing strong support as fans weighed favourite players, recent form and title chances.

Several supporters pointed to Brazil as a lifelong choice. One fan named Vinícius Júnior and Neymar as standout players, saying both perform at a high level. Asked how long the allegiance had lasted, the supporter said Brazil had always been the team to follow. Another Brazil backer said the side must bring home a sixth World Cup title, insisting nothing should stand in the way despite a recent draw.

Argentina also featured heavily in the conversation. One person initially struggled to explain the appeal before naming Kun Agüero as a favourite, praising players who give everything for the team. Others were more direct about Lionel Messi, with one supporter saying Argentina had to win and calling the side the boss of the tournament. When asked why Argentina draws so much affection, one respondent said the team was wasting up a lot of support.

France found backing from a fan who linked the choice to Arsenal and described the squad as one of the most complete from defence to attack. The supporter pointed to players such as William Saliba in the Premier League, strong centre backs and midfield options including Tchouaméni, and argued that France’s attack sets it apart.

The Netherlands also had support, though one fan noted the team had recently played Japan and finished with a draw. That same person doubted Brazil could win, saying the modern game had upgraded from the back line through midfield to the forwards, with younger players no longer giving established stars such as Messi time on the ball.

On the opening matches, one Brazil supporter felt teams could have performed better. Others said recent displays looked shaky but maintained faith in their chosen side. When asked where a favourite player might take them for a Valentine’s date, one respondent said anywhere nice would do.

Predictions ranged from Brazil and Argentina lifting the trophy to France going all the way and Messi remaining central to hopes for Argentina. Across the answers, loyalty, player quality and the pace of a changing game shaped how Jamaicans see the road to 2026.
