Government leaders say Jamaica’s national drug prevalence survey still ranks alcohol, cannabis, and tobacco as the substances most commonly used nationwide, with alcohol far ahead of the others. Even so, they are widening the national conversation to cover newer patterns of misuse, including psychoactive drugs such as Molly and ecstasy that officials say are appearing more often among young adults.

A national rapid situation assessment is planned to examine how combined use of energy drinks and alcohol is affecting the population. At the same time, authorities intend to launch Operation Lighthouse, a prevention drive that will reach 50 communities across the island to reduce substance misuse.

Schools will be a major focus of anti-vaping efforts. Officials told the House that many vaping devices are designed to resemble pens and pencils, making them harder for teachers and parents to spot. The National Council on Drug Abuse has legal authority to act against suppliers who sell vaping products to underage buyers, and enforcement will target those sellers.
