Jamroc Dept drops six-piece line marking Jamaica’s 64 years of Independence

2 min read

Jamroc Dept founder and creative director Fernando Edwards has introduced The 64 Years of Jamaica Independence Collection: 1962-2026, which went live officially on June 5. The six garments are meant to honour the country’s history while looking ahead, he said.

“The collection features six pieces. Each design carries its own identity while remaining connected through the shared themes of Jamaican pride, independence, heritage and modern streetwear,” Edwards told the Observer Online.

The drop arrives as Jamaica prepares for Independence festivities and has already drawn solid attention from shoppers. Edwards said demand has outpaced what the brand anticipated, with buyers welcoming a sharper, more refined spin on the usual Independence wardrobe.

“The feedback has been extremely encouraging. Customers have responded strongly to the way the collection combines Jamaican identity with a more elevated, contemporary streetwear presentation. The bold colours, jersey-inspired silhouettes, cultural details and the meaning behind the designs have created genuine conversation,” he said.

Supporters have also noted that the pieces feel fresh rather than formulaic.

“Many people have said the pieces feel celebratory without being predictable, which was important to me because I wanted the collection to represent where Jamaican culture has been, where it is now, and where it is going,” he shared.

Edwards is not positioning the line as apparel for August 6 alone. He wants Jamaicans at home and overseas to wear it throughout the year.

“My ultimate hope is for the collection to become more than something people wear for one day. I want it to give Jamaicans at home and throughout the diaspora a meaningful way to carry their identity with pride,” he said.

He also frames the release as progress for Jamroc Dept’s standing as a streetwear label grounded in Jamaican culture and recognised beyond the island.

“I want it to continue strengthening Jamroc Dept’s position as a global streetwear brand rooted in Jamaican culture. This collection is part of a larger story that begins with Independence and continues through the brand’s upcoming rugby activation, showing how fashion, sport, heritage and community can all work together,” said Edwards.

True to the label’s scarce-supply approach, quantities are tightly capped. Edwards said an early soft release went first to email subscribers, with only 64 units offered to mark Jamaica’s 64th Independence anniversary.

“Following that initial release, the collection is being introduced in controlled, limited production runs, with up to 200 pieces planned for the broader launch,” he said.

Further batches could follow if interest stays high, he noted, but the line is meant to stay deliberately scarce. The 64 Years of Jamaica Independence Collection: 1962-2026 is sold only at JamrocDept.com.
