Hanover survivor Jasean Greenfield rebuilds home and farm after 2017 attack
Jasean Greenfield, the Hanover woman whose former partner severed both her hands in 2017, says circumstances have improved in the months since her struggle for independence received wide public attention. At her Mount Peter home, she points to several changes that have given her a brighter outlook, including a new window paid for with money from a hurricane recovery grant.
After the story aired in April, members of the public responded with furniture and household supplies. Greenfield now has multiple beds, dressers, a wardrobe, plates, pots, and spoons. The main difficulty is finding room for everything; a friend is helping her store some of the items. She said her landlord has also provided a piece of land where she could put up a structure if she receives assistance to build a house.
Greenfield has moved into animal rearing and holds a certificate of ownership for her venture. She has bought chickens in batches of 70 to 100 and is now on her fourth flock, along with two Nubian goats and a cow. Sales have generally been steady, with her son's school among her buyers and neighbours purchasing when stock is available.
A picker from the Rural Agricultural Development Authority and two friends help her prepare chickens for sale, though business has slowed while schools are closed. Greenfield said unsold birds are a pressing concern as she also faces back-to-school expenses for her children. In another setback, a cow destroyed tomatoes, cucumbers, sweet peppers, and other crops in her backyard garden. Despite these hurdles, she remains focused on regaining ground in her home life and her farming work.
