JCC presses Labour Ministry for national review of Labour Relations Code

The Jamaica Chamber of Commerce (JCC) is urging the Ministry of Labour and Social Security to say when consultations will begin on a review of the Labour Relations Code, arguing that the process should move ahead without further delay.

In a media release, the chamber said the code has implications for Jamaicans at every level of society. JCC president Emile Leiba said any law or system that has operated for 50 years should be assessed to determine whether it remains suited to current conditions.

Leiba said Jamaica’s long-term economic competitiveness is linked to a labour market that functions fairly for all. He added that the JCC is prepared to take part in the review in a constructive manner and in good faith.

He also pointed to recent remarks by Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Jason Russell, who has publicly made labour law reform a key priority for his upcoming term.
