JDF opens inquiry after second barrack blaze at Up Park Camp

A barrack structure at Up Park Camp, home to Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) headquarters in St Andrew, caught fire this afternoon.

According to a JDF statement, the incident began around 2:30 p.m. The force’s own fire crew joined the Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB) and, working together, brought the flames under control. Officials reported the fire out by about 3:30 p.m.

Cooling-down work continues at the scene. What sparked the blaze has not yet been established.

A formal inquiry will start once the relevant authorities confirm that the damaged section is safe to enter. The episode marks a second fire involving the JDF within recent weeks, after living quarters were lost to flames in June.

The force acknowledged public unease over another incident at the St Andrew base.

"We understand the public's concern, especially as this is the second incident in recent months. The JDF maintains diligent management systems and safety protocols across all facilities," the JDF said.

"The JDF thanks the responding fire units for their prompt action and will provide further updates as additional information becomes available."
