Jamaica Fire Brigade Renovates Stony Hill Fire Station for Labour Day

The Jamaica Fire Brigade made the Stony Hill Fire Station in St. Andrew the focus of its main Labour Day activity for the year, as firefighters turned out on Monday (May 25) to help upgrade the property.

Commissioner Stewart Beckford told JIS News that the work fits into the Brigade’s yearly programme to improve fire stations that need repairs. He said Stony Hill was selected after discussions inside the organisation and a review of the state of the facility.

According to Mr. Beckford, the job covers several areas, including repairs to the plumbing system, electrical work, painting and fixes to the roof. “There is also some amount of heavy construction taking place because of leakage in the roof,” he stated.

Community participation and assistance from private-sector partners have helped move the effort forward, the Commissioner said. Among the supporters named were Pre-Mix Limited, BH Paints and Tools Hardware.

During the Labour Day activity at the Stony Hill station, Mr. Beckford also joined the work by putting paint on a wall at the facility.

He acknowledged that the full scope of repairs could not be wrapped up in one day, but said he expects the remaining work to be completed over the next few weeks, once backing from stakeholders continues. Mr. Beckford also praised the firefighters assigned to Stony Hill for their commitment, patience and cooperation.

The Commissioner said the Brigade received strong volunteer turnout from firefighters in different parts of Jamaica for Labour Day. “Once we identify a [major] project… and it is made known to the wider Brigade, you tend to have persons travelling from across the country to be a part of it. We have people [who came] from St. Elizabeth, St. James, St. Thomas and, of course, Kingston and St. Andrew… [who] turned up to lend support to this initiative,” he told JIS News.

Labour Day 2026 was marked under the theme ‘One People, One Purpose, In All Things Jamaica Wins’.
