JHTA Seeks Urgent Talks On Proposed GCT Hike For Tourism Activities

1 min read

The Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association has again asked the Government to meet quickly with industry leaders over plans to raise General Consumption Tax on tourism activities.

President Christopher Jarrett said early discussions are needed because the change could affect investment, jobs, Jamaica’s market position and wider economic growth. He acknowledged the Government’s attention to recovery after Hurricane Melissa and its duty to oversee public finances, but said the lack of talks is unsettling tourism stakeholders. Jarrett warned that higher GCT could make Jamaica costlier against rival destinations, weaken arrivals and add strain for operators.
