Westmoreland

Police have laid charges against a 21-year-old Negril man following a gun attack and robbery at a business place in Westmoreland, where one man was killed and another was wounded.

Joshua Vaz, also called “Josh”, of Negril, was charged on Friday with murder, wounding with intent, robbery with aggravation, and using a firearm to commit a felony.

The deceased has been identified as 35-year-old Nashon McGibbon, also known as “Bubbanash”, a businessman from Tigress Lane in Negril, Westmoreland.

Investigators from the Savanna-la-Mar Criminal Investigation Branch reported that about 8:40 p.m. on Friday, May 22, McGibbon was at his business when Vaz and another alleged accomplice attacked him. The men are accused of firing shots that struck McGibbon several times.

According to the police, McGibbon tried to get away, but the gunmen chased him and kept firing. After the shooting, the attackers allegedly took a bag from him with a laptop and an unknown amount of cash inside.

A second man, described as a visitor to Jamaica, was also hit by gunfire and received a wound to his left shoulder.

After the police were contacted, both injured men were taken to hospital. McGibbon was later pronounced dead.

Vaz was taken into custody during a police operation in Whitehall, Negril, on Tuesday, May 26. Police said he was officially charged on Friday, June 5, after being identified.

Arrangements for his court appearance are still being completed.
