Joshua Vaz charged over fatal shooting of Negril restaurant owner

Police have charged 21-year-old Joshua Vaz, also known as Josh, of Negril, Westmoreland, with murder arising from the May 22 killing of Negril restaurant owner Noshaun Myrie Bon, who was also called Bubba or Bubba Nash.

Vaz is also facing charges of wounding with intent, robbery with aggravation, and using a firearm to commit a felony. The Savanna-la-Mar Criminal Investigation Branch reported that about 8:40 p.m., 36-year-old Myrie Bon was at his business when Vaz and another man allegedly attacked him. The gunmen reportedly shot him several times, chased him as he tried to escape, and later took a bag containing a laptop and an unknown amount of cash. A European visitor was also shot in the left shoulder. Vaz was held during a police operation in Whitehall on Tuesday, May 26, and was charged on Friday, June 5 after a positive identification. His court date is being arranged.

In St. James, police went to the Retirement landfill after workers found a man’s body among garbage at the facility. The man, who was wearing a yellow and black shirt, is believed to have been killed about 8:00 a.m., though investigators have not yet determined the circumstances. A section of the landfill remained on fire from Friday, with Western Parks and Markets and the Jamaica Fire Brigade responding.

In St. Elizabeth, a toddler died after a two-vehicle collision on Pepper Mint Road on Saturday morning. Reports say the child was among four people in a Toyota Voxy that collided with a pickup about 10:30 a.m. Five injured persons were taken to Mandeville Regional Hospital, where the child was pronounced dead.

The Office of Utilities Regulation has given Jamaica Public Service until Monday to submit a preliminary report on the islandwide power outage that began about 9:00 p.m. on Friday, June 5 and continued into Saturday, June 6. The OUR wants details on the cause, system impact, response, stability and short-term measures to reduce the risk of another blackout.

The Meteorological Service says a trough over the central Caribbean will keep Jamaica unstable through the middle of next week, with showers and thunderstorms expected in most parishes, especially eastern and south-central areas. At Up Park Camp, fire investigators returned Saturday after a Friday night blaze destroyed living quarters at Jamaica Defence Force headquarters. The fire began about 7:41 p.m. in the barracks area, and units from the JDF, Rollington Town, Half-Way-Tree, York Park, Trench Town and Spanish Town helped put it out. No injuries were reported.
