Josko Gvardiol Commits To Manchester City Until 2031

1 min readManchester

Manchester City have tied down Josko Gvardiol on a fresh agreement that runs through to the summer of 2031, extending the defender’s stay well beyond his earlier 2028 expiry date.

The 24-year-old Croatia international had been linked with major European clubs, with Real Madrid and Bayern Munich among those credited with interest. Reports in recent weeks indicated that negotiations between City and Gvardiol were moving positively, and the talks have now produced a long-term commitment.

Gvardiol is presently with Croatia as they build towards the World Cup. Their opening fixture against England could put him up against some of his Manchester City teammates.

His first campaign at City was a strong one, ending with the club naming him player of the season for 2024-25. The following year proved more difficult after a broken leg in January restricted him to 25 matches in all competitions.

He made his comeback in May, getting short minutes against Crystal Palace before another outing in the last league match against Aston Villa as he continued his recovery.

Able to play both centrally in defence and at left back, Gvardiol remains firmly in Pep Guardiola’s thinking as City secure an important part of their back line for the years ahead.
