JPL relegation race tightens as four clubs battle to stay up

2 min readSt. Catherine

As the Jamaica Premier League regular season nears its finish, Molynes United, Treasure Beach, Harbour View and Spanish Town Police are the clubs under the most pressure in the relegation race.

All four teams need strong returns from their remaining fixtures to keep their places in the country’s top division. Molynes United have the best position among the group, sitting 11th on 36 points. Treasure Beach follow on 34, Harbour View are on 33, and Spanish Town Police are last with 26.

Spanish Town Police face the steepest challenge. Thursday’s 1-0 defeat to Portmore United further damaged their chances, leaving them with three matches to erase an eight-point gap. To remain in the league, Spanish Town must win all three games and also depend on Treasure Beach losing each of their four remaining fixtures.

Their closing schedule adds to the difficulty, with matches still to come against Chapelton Maroons, Arnett Gardens and Racing United. Spanish Town have allowed 95 goals this season, including 18 against those three upcoming opponents.

Harbour View remain close enough to safety to believe they can stay up, with the Stars of the East only one point short of the survival mark. Their form, however, has been troubling. One of Jamaica’s established local football clubs has managed just three wins in its last 10 matches and has been beaten in its last two outings.

The run-in will not be easy for Harbour View. They must still play league leaders Montego Bay United, fellow relegation battlers Molynes United, and defending champions Cavalier. Relegation would mark a sharp decline for a club that lifted the JPL title only four years ago.

For Treasure Beach, staying in the league would carry major significance after the club was badly affected by Hurricane Melissa last year. As St Elizabeth’s only JPL representative, the team carries the parish’s football hopes and is expected to have strong local backing during the final stretch.

Treasure Beach improved their outlook with a valuable 2-1 win over Waterhouse on Thursday. They will now try to collect more points against Tivoli Gardens, Dunbeholden, Montego Bay United and Molynes United. The Molynes match, set for the final day of the regular season, could prove decisive because both clubs are directly involved in the relegation battle.

Molynes appear to have the clearest route to safety, having survived similar pressure in each of the past two seasons. The Jermaine Thomas-coached side have built momentum with three straight wins, highlighted by a 9-0 victory over Spanish Town Police.

They next face Tivoli Gardens before two important closing fixtures against Harbour View and Treasure Beach, matches that could settle which clubs remain in the Jamaica Premier League.
