JPS Reviews Grid Failure Behind Nationwide Power Cut

The Jamaica Public Service says it is trying to determine the initial fault that set off a chain reaction in the electricity network and led to yesterday’s nationwide outage.

The utility said supply has returned to every customer who lost service during the blackout. Hugh Grant, JPS president and chief executive officer, gave the update at an afternoon press briefing. He said lightning hit important infrastructure in the Corporate Area, but that event alone should not have spread across the full grid.

Grant said the company is putting measures in place to avoid a repeat. He added that separate faults, not tied to the blackout, are still affecting some customers.
