JTA urges black attire as teachers await Finance Ministry salary talks
The Jamaica Teachers' Association is calling on educators across Jamaica to wear black on Monday and Tuesday as the union heads into salary discussions with the Ministry of Finance on Tuesday.
The JTA said in a Sunday statement that the ministry had officially invited the organisation to an 8:30 a.m. negotiating meeting on Tuesday. The union said the session should focus on outstanding areas of the claims it previously submitted.
The association said the black clothing is meant to signal teachers' unhappiness over what it described as the poor level of respect being shown to them. It said members are experiencing deep frustration, tiredness and rising impatience, and that the lengthy process has placed an unfair strain on teachers while testing their patience, self-worth and professional dignity.
JTA President Mark Malabver said the union's leadership continues to stand firmly with teachers. "We understand the sacrifices you continue to make daily, even in the face of uncertainty and delay," he said.
"Let us be clear: this struggle is not merely about salaries, it is fundamentally a fight for social justice. It is about correcting longstanding inequities and ensuring that teachers are valued in a manner consistent with their indispensable role in national development", Malabver added.
The JTA said that although efforts to settle the matters have continued, there has not been any meaningful advance on the key issues.
The union also urged teachers to remain attentive and prepared for any update. It said that if Tuesday's talks fail to bring real movement on the major claims and the graduate allowance issue, members will determine what action follows.
