Khalil al-Hayya chosen to lead Hamas after internal vote against Meshaal

The Palestinian organisation Hamas has appointed Khalil al-Hayya to head the movement, taking over from Yahya Sinwar, who was killed by Israeli forces in Gaza in October 2024.
Al-Hayya, who previously served as deputy chairman, prevailed in an internal run-off ballot against Khaled Meshaal, a former political chief of Hamas.
