Caribbean health officials ease hantavirus fears as Trump names Kari Lake for Kingston embassy
Regional health officials are urging calm after overseas hantavirus deaths stirred concern on social media, including discussion of cases linked to cruise travel.
Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) Executive Director Dr Lisa Indar said the rodent species associated with the Andes strain, which can spread between people through very close contact, is not found in the Caribbean. Hantavirus is a serious zoonotic disease spread mainly through infected rodents or by breathing in particles from droppings or saliva. There is no antiviral treatment or vaccine; care is supportive, including oxygen therapy. Officials say the strain does not spread as easily as COVID-19 and is not considered a pandemic threat. CARPHA is still urging sanitation, rodent control, and vigilance, while stressing there is no current cause for alarm in the region.
