Off-Duty Policeman Shoots Woman During Dispute With Taxi Operator in St Andrew

St Andrew, Jamaica: Policeman Shoots Woman During Dispute- A shooting incident on Tuesday afternoon left a woman nursing a gunshot wound after an off-duty policeman intervened in a confrontation involving a taxi operator near the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona campus.

The incident unfolded shortly after 4 p.m. along Mona Road in the vicinity of the university’s main gate.

Police reports indicate that trouble began after the taxi driver requested payment of fare from the female passenger. The woman allegedly became disorderly, prompting the operator to stop the vehicle and ask her to leave. Investigators say she refused.

Authorities reported that the driver then attempted to open the passenger door, but the woman allegedly resisted and became physically aggressive. She eventually exited the vehicle and reportedly shoved the taxi operator in the chest.

According to investigators, the situation escalated further when the woman allegedly grabbed a kitchen knife that was inside the driver’s door and used it to strike the operator, causing injuries.

The incident reportedly drew the attention of an off-duty policeman who was passing through the area in his private vehicle. The officer is said to have identified himself and instructed the woman to drop the weapon.

Police say the woman ignored repeated commands and allegedly attempted to stab the taxi driver. The officer then discharged his firearm, hitting her in the left thigh.

The injured woman was transported to the University Hospital of the West Indies for medical treatment. Investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
