ITA Urges Jamaican Drivers To Plan Routes And Avoid Distractions

1 min read

Motorists are being urged to organise their journeys before they leave home, as traffic officials continue efforts to limit driver distraction and reduce crashes on the nation’s roads.

Dontae Matthews, Manager of Corporate Communications and Public Relations at the Island Traffic Authority, told JIS News recently that knowing the route in advance is a key part of defensive driving. “Know where you’re going and how much time it takes to get there, so you can know what time to leave out,” he urged.

Distracted driving includes anything that pulls a motorist’s focus from driving. It may affect what the driver sees, what the driver does with their hands, or how the driver is thinking.

Mr. Matthews said weak preparation can push motorists into unsafe habits behind the wheel, including eating, grooming, or trying to adjust navigation tools while the vehicle is in motion.

He advised drivers to enter GPS details before setting off and to look at traffic updates beforehand, especially where roadworks or diversions may affect the trip.

Parents and guardians, he added, should stop at a safe place if they have to deal with children or handle another matter while travelling.

Mr. Matthews said the Authority is still partnering with several stakeholders to encourage safer driving and help bring down road deaths. He called on all road users to stay focused and avoid distractions when operating vehicles. “Remember the three types of distractions and ensure that you’re not caught in any of them,” he said.
