Jamaica marked the ceremonial start of the 11th Biennial Diaspora Conference on June 15, 2026, at the Montego Bay Convention Centre. The opening forms part of a wider programme running from June 14 to 18, 2026, bringing together Jamaicans abroad, government leaders, business stakeholders, youth representatives, and development partners to strengthen ties between the homeland and its global community.

Officials have framed the gathering around the theme “Diaspora Partnerships: Re-Building a More Climate-Resilient Jamaica.” The biennial forum is intended to advance practical cooperation on national priorities, with climate adaptation and recovery positioned among the central issues under discussion.

Organisers have set out several key objectives for the conference. These include deepening partnerships between Jamaica and its diaspora communities; mobilising overseas investment, expertise, and philanthropy; supporting climate resilience, infrastructure rebuilding, and sustainable development; expanding trade, entrepreneurship, and innovation opportunities; and strengthening youth engagement alongside intergenerational leadership.

Kamina Johnson Smith has emphasised the importance of diaspora contributions to Jamaica's development. Earl Jarrett has also highlighted the conference as a major homecoming for overseas Jamaicans and a significant opportunity to build lasting partnerships.

The five-day schedule is expected to keep focus on how Jamaicans worldwide can channel resources, knowledge, and goodwill into domestic development efforts. Stakeholders say the opening ceremony sets the stage for sustained dialogue on rebuilding a more climate-resilient Jamaica through stronger diaspora ties.
