Supreme Court Rejects Trump Executive Order on Birthright Citizenship

1 min read

America's highest court has overturned an executive order from President Donald Trump that sought to end birthright citizenship for everyone born on United States territory. The judgment marks a serious setback for Trump's wider push to reshape immigration policy across the country.

Trump signed the directive on 20 January 2025, the day he returned to office. It would have denied automatic US citizenship to children born in the country whose parents held temporary legal status or were without proper documentation.

The nine-member Supreme Court confirmed a lower court's finding that the order breached the US Constitution and conflicted with prior Supreme Court precedent on the matter.
