FIFA Weighs Fine After Argentina Players Show Malvinas Banner

1 min read

Argentina risks a FIFA penalty after members of the squad held up a banner affirming Buenos Aires’ claim to the Falkland Islands in the wake of their World Cup semi-final triumph against England.

The sign carried the Spanish slogan “Las Malvinas son Argentinas,” translating as “The Falklands are Argentine.” Britain and Argentina still contest sovereignty over the territory, and they went to war over it in 1982.

In 2014, FIFA already sanctioned the Argentine Football Association when players presented the identical message ahead of a friendly. Officials have not disclosed whether a fresh fine or other measure will follow this latest incident.
