Jamaica marks annual remembrance day for Eventide Home fire victims
Jamaica has formally marked May 20 as the National Day of Remembrance for victims of the Eventide Home fire, with a floral tribute ceremony in Kingston honouring those who died in the 1980 disaster.
The observance included music by the Jamaica Fire Brigade Band, an invocation by Reverend Captain A. Carile of Webster Memorial United Church, a welcome from acting Permanent Secretary Junior Rose, and the reading of the proclamation by Andrea McCertie of the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission.
The proclamation, issued by Governor-General Sir Patrick Allen and dated May 14, 2026, declared that May 20 should be observed each year in memory of the victims and survivors of the Eventide Home fire. It noted that the disaster occurred on May 20, 1980, at the Myers Ward of the Eventide Home for the Aged, and that more than 150 elderly women lost their lives.
Minister of Local Government and Community Development Desmond McKenzie, delivering the keynote address, said the official remembrance had been long in coming. He said earlier tributes had included graveside services and days of mourning, but this was the first official national observance of May 20 for the victims.
McKenzie said the fire began about 1:00 a.m. and drew attention in Jamaica and overseas. He said three female wards, including Myers Ward, were destroyed, and that the buildings collapsed shortly after firefighters arrived. He also pointed to the tragedy as a turning point in the country’s approach to caring for elderly and vulnerable people.
According to McKenzie, the Vineyard Town Golden Age Home, opened on April 11, 1985, and the Denham Town Golden Age Home were developed as part of the response to the disaster. He said Vineyard Town now serves more than 460 residents, including former Eventide Home residents.
Floral tributes were laid by public officials and representatives, including Olivia Grange on behalf of Prime Minister Andrew Holness, Wavel Hinds on behalf of the Opposition Leader, McKenzie, Pernell Charles Jr., Senate President Tom Tavares-Finson, Jamaica Fire Brigade Commissioner Stewart Beckford, survivor Keith Parker, and others. A guard of honour made up of women from the Jamaica Fire Brigade also formed part of the ceremony.
