JCF farewell Constable Shankai Gordon at Bunker Hill thanksgiving service

Bunker Hill, Clarendon — Relatives, Jamaica Constabulary Force colleagues and senior officers filled a local church for a thanksgiving service honouring Constable Shankai Shane Gordon, regimental number 15978, who died after a motorcycle crash while heading home and was pronounced dead on arrival at Linstead Hospital.

Detective Sergeant David Long of the Chaplaincy Services Branch led portions of the service. Assistant Commissioner of Police Howard Chambers represented Commissioner of Police Dr Kevin Blake. Also acknowledged were Senior Superintendent Tommy Lee Chambers, Senior Superintendent Leighton Gray, and Superintendent Toms, acting head of St. Catherine North, who later delivered the eulogy.

Deputy Superintendent Dixon read the commissioner’s tribute. Gordon joined the Force on 15 July 2013 and gave 12 years and 11 months of service in the St. Catherine North Division, earning two commendations for exemplary work and conduct. The commissioner named his spouse Jasmine, sons Shakir and Shakiri, and parents Lansford and Mary among those mourning.

Corporal Tanisha Lewis, of the Jamaica Police Federation’s central committee, praised Gordon’s professionalism, humility and humour, and urged officers to wear protective gear and obey traffic laws after what she described as a rise in fatal vehicle and motorcycle collisions among colleagues. Batch 106 mates recalled him as “Worm” or “Worm General”, nicknames that stuck from teachers’ college days and later appeared on his sports jerseys.

Born 5 September 1990 in Spaldings, Clarendon, Gordon attended Bunkerville Basic School, Stacyville Primary and Edwin Allen High School before qualifying in primary teacher education at Moneague Teachers College. A sister’s remembrance traced his path from teaching posts into policing and fatherhood in St. Catherine. St. Catherine North’s sports family said he pressed for Area 5 athletics training from late 2025, helped coach the 2026 squad, and backed a divisional fitness club.

Bread of Life Christian Academy staff remembered him cheering at sports day on 20 May 2026 and speaking with Constable Micah Johns on career day on 14 May 2026. A planned appreciation plaque was presented posthumously to Jasmine Edwards. Orangefield Primary also expressed condolences.

Reverend Sharon Lee preached from Second Timothy, stressing that Gordon’s earthly watch had ended. Scripture readings included Ecclesiastes 3 by ACP Chambers and 1 Corinthians 15 by Amber McLean and Moisha Newbie. The service closed with a flag presentation to his spouse and sons, wreath-laying by JCF and federation representatives, and burial rites.
