Western Europe heatwave brings record temperatures to France, UK and Spain

Western Europe is in the grip of a severe heatwave that has driven temperatures to unprecedented levels across several countries, leaving tens of millions of people contending with punishing heat.

France has recorded its hottest day ever. On Wednesday, the country's national temperature indicator — an average of day and night readings taken at dozens of locations — reached 30 degrees Celsius. That figure is the highest since the benchmark was first established in 1947. In Paris, temperatures climbed to nearly 41 degrees Celsius as the national surge intensified.

More than half of France remains under red heat alert. The western part of the country has faced added strain, with tens of thousands of homes left without power while residents endure the extreme conditions.

The United Kingdom has posted record heat for the month of June. Spain has registered its highest daily average temperature since 1950. The milestones across all three countries point to a heat event spanning national borders rather than a single localised hot spell.

Red heat alerts are in force across large sections of the continent as populations cope with the sustained high temperatures. With a record national average in France, a June record in Britain, and Spain's strongest daily average in more than seven decades, the wave has simultaneously tested capital cities and countrywide measurement systems. Tens of millions of people across Western Europe remain exposed as authorities maintain the most serious heat warnings over broad areas.
