KINGSTON, Jamaica — The University of the West Indies (UWI) is urging prospective students, partners and members of the public to be on guard against a bogus website that falsely presents itself as connected to the regional institution.
In a press release issued Monday, the university said the page is neither endorsed nor authorised by UWI. Officials believe operators are using the institution's name and branding without permission to suggest a relationship that does not exist.
UWI also flagged that the fraudulent site hosts a form built to gather personal information. Because the page is not part of the university's official web presence, any details submitted there — including names, e-mail addresses, telephone numbers or other private data — do not reach UWI.
The university encouraged anyone who may have been misled to treat follow-up messages claiming to come from UWI with heightened care. "They should refrain from sharing additional personal or financial information in response to unsolicited messages and verify all communications exclusively through official university channels," the university said.
Prospective students and other stakeholders were reminded that reliable information on UWI programmes, admissions and partnerships is published only through legitimate university platforms.
UWI said it has launched a coordinated response that includes reporting the matter to relevant international cyber and law-enforcement authorities, pursuing legal and technical action to have the site taken down, and working with partners to reduce possible harm.
Anyone who interacted with the website or holds information that could assist the inquiry is asked to contact the university at [email protected].
