Poolside and beach parties drive a stylish World Cup look among Jamaican women

2 min read

For many devoted supporters, World Cup season means studying formations, debating starting elevens, and tracking every tactical shift. Alongside that intensity, another mood is building at poolside gatherings and beach-side viewing events, where women are leaning fully into the tournament by mixing team jerseys with bold, strappy fashion.

Tamoya Matthews, 24, has carved out her own World Cup lane on that more social, style-forward side of the game — and she makes no apology for it.

"As a non-football fan, I prefer Brazil because the first jersey I ever got was a Brazil jersey, so I just work with it. The whole Jamaica supports Brazil, so why not."

Matthews appears in jersey looks for Swim Haus Ltd, a brand run by Xao Haughton, as part of a football-themed outfit presentation. The range pairs replica and team shirts with swim pieces and holiday-resort wear, aimed at women who want the tournament atmosphere without giving up personal flair.

For Matthews, the World Cup is less about match analysis and more about presence, energy, and how she shows up. She likes teaming her jersey with current trends and riding the buzz that sweeps Jamaica whenever the global tournament rolls around. The crowd, the parties, and the carnival feel, she says, make the season worthwhile even when she is not glued to every fixture.

"I normally rock my jersey with a cute little shorts," she said. The fun and excitement around World Cup season is top-tier. You don't have to watch the game, just a drink in your hand, the vibe, and being in the atmosphere is really fun.

That ease — joining in without feeling you must know every rule — is what she values most.

"I like that I can be myself and I can find different ways to style the jersey so I don't feel left out. As much as how the men watch and understand the football, I can be at the pool in my swimwear and still be a part of the experience."

Her picture of the perfect watch party is straightforward but loud with excitement.

"Big screen, lots of liquor, food for sure, and in a good space where the energy is booming and everyone is excited," she said. "I'd definitely go to a finals match. I would definitely want to go and experience it."

Matthews does not claim to be among the tournament's hardest-core followers, yet she is backing Brazil — and Neymar's side — to claim a sixth title.

"I hope the team wins, but I'm not here for the hat-tricks, I'm here for the theatrics," Matthews said smiling.
