Jamaica road fatalities fall 22% as higher minimum wage starts and ocean heat sets June record
Thursday's main updates ranged from road safety and wages in Jamaica to a new global warning on ocean temperatures, alongside a sports development, exchange rates and the day's weather outlook.
Jamaica has now reached the midpoint of 2026 with road deaths running 22 per cent lower than before, though the toll remains severe. Since the start of the year, 146 people have died in 131 fatal crashes across the island. Data from the Island Traffic Authority also showed that no deadly collision was recorded in the 24-hour period between June 30 and July 1.
A change to workers' pay also took effect today. The national minimum wage increased by J$1,000, taking the weekly rate for regular workers and security guards from J$16,000 to J$17,000 for a 40-hour workweek. While some stakeholders welcomed the rise, they argue that it will not meaningfully ease the pressure from the rising cost of living and are calling for another increase.
Internationally, European scientists warned today that ocean surface temperatures climbed to a record high for June. That development has added to fears of more dangerous heat waves during the summer and sharpened concern about the worsening global climate crisis. Experts say the combination of very warm seas and the approach of El Nino means more temperature records are likely in the coming months as the world moves into unfamiliar conditions.
In sports, Jamaica's advancement in winter disciplines, especially ice hockey, could receive a significant lift if Jamaica Ice Hockey Federation president Anderson finalises a partnership with synthetic ice rink manufacturer Ultimate Hockey. Anderson said the federation wants to bring members of Ultimate Hockey to Jamaica so they can meet stakeholders and discuss the next steps for a possible arrangement.
In foreign exchange trading at midday today, the US dollar was selling for J$158.69, the British pound sterling for J$212.02 and the Canadian dollar for J$113.69.
The forecast for Thursday calls for a mostly sunny morning, with windy conditions developing by late morning. Widely scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon, mainly across western parishes and hilly areas, while other sections of the island should remain partly cloudy.
