Reggae Girlz beat Guyana 2-0 as coach urges sharper finishing
Jamaica’s Reggae Girlz defeated Guyana 2-0 in their World Cup qualifying campaign, but the post-match mood centred as much on missed chances as on the result. The coach said the team controlled the contest from early, looked prepared even in warm-ups, and deserved a wider margin after creating enough opportunities to settle the match sooner.
He said he had not yet reviewed the official numbers, but estimated Jamaica had about 70 per cent of possession and more than 20 attempts at goal. The Guyana goalkeeper was credited for making important saves, while Jamaica were also left frustrated by finishing, the playing surface and moments when the ball bobbled or players lost footing near goal.
Still, the coach said the performance showed progress. “It’s not about perfection, it’s about us making progress,” he said, adding that the team’s ability to find a way through was a positive sign.
Goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer welcomed the turnout, which was announced at 6,510. She said the players felt the crowd behind them and described the supporters as giving the team an extra lift. Spencer also said seeing young girls at the match mattered deeply, because it showed them that playing for Jamaica was possible.
On her own clean sheet, Spencer said concentration was key in a game where Jamaica had much of the ball. She said her job was to keep the defensive structure together and help ensure the team did not concede.
The coach said the staff will review the week before turning attention to the June international window and preparation for October’s final qualifying round. He said player form at club level will remain important when selections are made.
He also praised Drew as a calming midfield presence, saying she influences the tempo, helps Jamaica advance play and works hard without the ball. Asked about Jamaica’s style, he said the focus is not copying other nations, but building an identity around the qualities of Jamaican players: bravery in possession, creativity, width and the ability to take on defenders.
