Latoya Bulgin Family Lawyer Backs Murder Charge Against Police Constable
Attorney Isat Buchanan, who represents the relatives of Latoya 'Buju' Bulgin, says the murder case now brought against the police constable connected to her death marks a serious move in the family’s fight for justice.
Buchanan said he has stood with Bulgin’s family during what he described as a painful process, while pressing for answers, accountability and proper consideration of their concerns by the relevant state authorities.
His response came after the Director of Public Prosecutions ruled that Constable Andrew Wilson should face a murder charge arising from the fatal shooting of 45-year-old Bulgin at Granville Square in St. James on May 18. That decision followed an investigation by the Independent Commission of Investigations, INDECOM.
The charge has drawn broad public approval, with many Jamaicans speaking out against Bulgin’s death. Buchanan said the family is thankful that the matter has received the level of attention they believe it required.
He said the development carries added weight in a country facing serious crime challenges, where questions about police conduct and accountability remain central to national debate. Buchanan also pointed to the fact that fatal police shootings have passed 100, saying the decision to prosecute signals that officers, like all citizens, must answer to the law when deadly force is alleged to have been misused.
He described the charge as an important advance for accountability, trust in public institutions and respect for the rule of law. Buchanan added that while Bulgin’s relatives welcome the development, they recognise that the case is now before the court and will wait on the trial process to run its course.
