Trossard double powers Belgium past New Zealand into World Cup last 32
Belgium sealed their place in the World Cup knockout phase with a dominant 5-1 win over New Zealand, in a performance that stood out as their finest of the tournament so far.
Both sides entered the match needing victory, and the Belgians imposed themselves from the first whistle. Trossard opened the scoring by reacting quickly to a loose ball after a Kevin De Bruyne corner. He added his second five minutes into the second half.
De Bruyne then found the net himself with a well-taken long-range effort to push the lead to 3-0. New Zealand pulled one back through Elijah Just, but Belgium answered almost at once when substitute Romelu Lukaku headed in less than a minute after stepping onto the pitch.
Another replacement, Alexis Saelemaekers, rounded off the win with a fifth goal in stoppage time. Belgium ended Group G in first place on goal difference and move on to the round of 32, while New Zealand exit the tournament with a single point from three group games.
