JSE Micro Market opens equity funding route for small Jamaican businesses

The Jamaica Stock Exchange launched its Micro Stock Market in June 2026, creating a regulated avenue for Jamaica’s smallest enterprises to secure between J$50 million and J$100 million in equity financing. The initiative is intended to supply growing businesses with investment capital without requiring them to take on additional loans or debt.

Many promising enterprises struggle to expand because they cannot provide the collateral required by banks, while grant funding is temporary and admission to the JSE’s Main and Junior markets remains beyond their reach. The resulting shortage of capital can prevent businesses from creating jobs or generating export earnings.

The Micro Market targets companies that have established products, increasing revenue, capable leadership and ambitions to compete locally and internationally. It is also expected to improve corporate governance, financial transparency, credibility and investor confidence, preparing participating businesses to move eventually to the Junior Market.

Companies will have access to sponsors, professional advisers and assistance with financial reporting, governance standards and investor preparation. The platform also expands the range of financing available to small and medium-sized enterprises at different stages of their development.

Businesses that are not yet prepared to list may enter the Jamaica Stock Exchange Sandbox programme. Through the sandbox, enterprises can gain practical experience with the standards and responsibilities associated with joining the exchange before pursuing an actual listing.

Government incentives attached to the programme include a complete income-tax holiday during the first five years after listing. Companies will then receive a 50 per cent income-tax concession from the sixth through the 10th year. The incentives are designed to help participating firms retain earnings, reinvest profits, employ more people and increase exports.

By raising equity, entrepreneurs can bring investors into their companies and share future growth instead of pledging their assets and accumulating more debt. The JSE says the Micro Market forms part of a wider development strategy to broaden participation in Jamaica’s capital markets and help smaller enterprises realise their potential.
