Mark Golding urges unity and worker dignity in Labour Day 2026 message
Opposition Leader Mark Golding has called on Jamaicans to use Labour Day 2026 as a moment for service, unity and renewed respect for the people whose work keeps the country going.
In his Labour Day message, Golding said the observance remains tied to Jamaica’s 1938 labour unrest, when ordinary Jamaicans challenged injustice and demanded better pay, safer and fairer conditions, and recognition of their dignity. He said those struggles helped strengthen working-class representation, encouraged political organisation and moved Jamaica closer to self-government and independence.
Golding said the day has become both a remembrance of that history and a practical call to improve communities. He noted that Jamaicans across the island would be cleaning, painting, building, repairing and helping to improve public spaces under the 2026 theme, “One people, one purpose. In all things, Jamaica wins.”
He argued that national development cannot rest only with the state, saying community work shows that citizens also carry responsibility for the condition of the country. He said small acts of service help to protect the land, strengthen neighbourhoods and build a stronger nation.
Golding also used the message to highlight current pressures on Jamaican households. He said many people are still dealing with the damage left by last October’s hurricane, including families living beneath leaking blue tarpaulins. He also pointed to war and international aggression, rising living costs, workers struggling to make ends meet and young educated Jamaicans seeking real opportunities at home instead of overseas.
He said Labour Day should prompt Jamaica to ask whether work is providing dignity, stability and a path to a better life. Golding named nurses, teachers, police officers, farmers, factory workers, hotel employees, taxi operators, vendors and small business owners among those he described as central to the nation.
The opposition leader said those workers deserve a stronger voice in national decision-making. He pledged continued advocacy for a fairer society and greater social cohesion, saying Jamaica’s progress has always depended on people speaking up, engaging each other and acting together.
Golding closed by urging Jamaicans to recommit to shared purpose, integrity and unity, saying the country can overcome its challenges when citizens value one another’s contribution and work in Jamaica’s interest.
