LeBron James Ends Lakers Tenure, Sets Sights on 24th NBA Season With Title Contender
LeBron James is moving on from the Los Angeles Lakers, opening the door to the next major chapter in his career. Sixteen years after his headline-making move from Cleveland to Miami, the superstar is preparing to suit up for a different organisation once more.
James has informed the Lakers that his eight seasons in purple and gold are at an end and that he intends to extend his own record by playing a 24th NBA season with another team. In recent years he has repeatedly stressed that adding more championships remains his driving force, which strongly suggests he will target a franchise he views as a genuine 2027 title threat.
Golden State are understood to feature on his radar, while some observers will ask whether returns to Cleveland or Miami are realistic options. Another possibility is San Antonio, where he could link up with 7-foot-4 global sensation Victor Wembanyama.
"I've done it all. I've seen it all," James said in May when the Lakers' campaign closed — the night that marked his final appearance for the club. "Just being able to compete and trying to win championships, I think that's a motivating factor."
One piece of the puzzle is already settled: James will return for at least one more season, a step his family backed. He had previously said his wife Savannah and 12-year-old daughter Zhuri would weigh heavily on whether he kept playing.
Choosing his next home ranks among the most consequential moves of the NBA offseason, sitting alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo's reported trade from Milwaukee to Miami. James is now expected to listen to pitches from interested franchises — with Golden State, Miami and Cleveland among those likely to reach out, according to a person familiar with the situation — before settling on a destination.
How quickly that process unfolds remains unclear, and the same source told The Associated Press that salary will not shape James' choice.
The Lakers issued a statement on Wednesday thanking James for his eight years with the organisation. "LeBron James is one of the greatest athletes in history," said Jeanie Buss, a member of the Lakers' ownership group. "We will always be thankful for his eight years with the Lakers, including the title he led us to in 2020 under the toughest imaginable circumstances, and the countless records he broke in purple and gold. We wish him all the best in the future, both on the court and off. He will always be a cherished part of the Lakers family."
ESPN broke the news first, citing James' longtime agent and Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul.
