Legacy Isle breaks Eros Trophy record as Dream Catcher wins 1000 Guineas
Dream Catcher secured Saturday’s $3.75-million 1000 Guineas Classic for fillies in dominant style, but the main talking point at Caymanas Park came from Rohan Crichton’s Legacy Isle in the Eros Trophy.
The six-year-old bay horse controlled the Graded Stakes/Open Allowance event for horses three years old and upward, completing seven furlongs, or 1,400 metres, in 1:22.3. That run lowered the 1:22.4 standard set by the great Eros in 1991, ending a 35-year hold on the record.
With Raddesh Roman aboard, Legacy Isle started to take command as the field came away from the five-furlong marker. After moving in front, he maintained the tempo, quickened strongly in the closing stages and won by 3¼ lengths, drawing a lively reaction from the stands as the old mark was finally beaten.
Girvano, ridden by Tevin Foster, took second, while Nautical Star, with Jordan Barrett aboard, finished third.
Legacy Isle’s record run added an unexpected highlight to one of the track’s major race days. In the following race, Dream Catcher justified her billing in the fillies’ Classic, winning the Futurity contest with authority.
Dream Catcher stopped the timer at 1:41.2, finishing ahead of stablemate Taylor Made, ridden by Robert Halledeen, and Giving Thanks, partnered by Reyan Lewis.
The weekend programme continues on Sunday with the $3.75-million 2000 Guineas Classic for colts and geldings.
