Brian and Tony Gold return with new single Love Surrounding

Jamaican reggae and dancehall duo Brian and Tony Gold have released a new single, Love Surrounding, and used a television appearance to mark what they describe as a return to recording and performing together.

The pair, known for tight vocal harmony, said they decided to step back into the spotlight so fans would know they are still active. They have continued to work both as a duo and separately, and said audiences have been asking for new material for a long time.

Love Surrounding is an unconditional love song that, they said, anyone in a relationship can connect with. Producer Robert Livingston of Big Yard studio supplied a rhythm and invited them to write to it. Brian developed the Love Surround concept and asked Tony Gold to contribute a verse. Brian said he usually handles the writing himself, but wanted Tony’s input on this track. Tony Gold said he was overseas when Brian began the song, wrote his verse after receiving the verse and chorus, recorded it, and sent the part back to Jamaica for the final mix.

Their stage name grew out of an early search for identity. When they entered the Tastee contest they were billed as Brian Thompson and Patrick Morrison. Combinations such as Patrick and Brian and Brian and Tony felt incomplete, so they added Gold after people began calling them golden voices. Tony Gold said neither of them had sung as a unit before Brian won that contest; he stepped in on backing vocals and the blend locked in. From then on, he said, their stage chemistry felt almost magical.

Asked about their biggest record, one of the duo pointed to Sexy Lady with Shaggy as Brian’s largest hit, while noting that the public often cites Can You as the standout. They also performed Love Surrounding during the appearance.
