Luis Gerardo Mendez says World Cup match at Maracanã changed his view of football
Actor Luis Gerardo Mendez says his understanding of live performance shifted after he attended a World Cup match in Rio de Janeiro and watched Messi play at the Maracanã.
Mendez said that, as an actor, he had long regarded theatre as the most powerful spectacle anywhere. That view changed inside the stadium, where the match was also being carried live to audiences around the world.
The experience, he said, made it clear to him that football, not theatre, held the larger global stage.
