Olympian Malik James-King is hoping to produce his strongest 400 metres hurdles performance of the season when he lines up at the JAAA Puma National Junior and Senior Championships next week at the National Stadium.

The former national champion has had an injury-affected campaign, but said he is managing his return carefully and focusing on one race at a time. Despite a quieter season than usual, the 26-year-old is still expected to be a serious contender in the men’s 400m hurdles.

James-King, who captured the national title in 2024, said his body is now responding better to training after earlier setbacks. He said there were periods when he could not train consistently because his body reacted poorly after certain sessions, but he believes he is adjusting more comfortably to the programme.

He added that his current condition has given him confidence heading into the championships. “With how I feel today, I think I should do something great,” James-King said.

His season’s best stands at 49.15 seconds, but he said he wants to close the season much faster, with an eye on returning to the 47-second range and eventually pushing towards the 46s. No Jamaican man has yet gone under 47 seconds in the event. James-King’s lifetime best is 47.42 seconds.

James-King said full fitness requires more than track work, pointing to recovery, stretching, gym work, nutrition, physiotherapy and massage as important parts of preparation. He said access to resources remains a major challenge in getting every area of performance to come together.

He is expected to face strong competition from Akeem Wilson, who owns the fastest Jamaican men’s 400m hurdles time this season at 48.29 seconds. Defending champion Rusheen Clarke has not been entered for the event. The championships are scheduled for June 18 to 21 at the National Stadium.
