Manchester City reclaim Women’s Super League crown as Arsenal drop points at Brighton

LONDON, United Kingdom (AFP) — Manchester City have taken the Women’s Super League championship without contesting a match on Wednesday, with a 1-1 outcome for Arsenal at Brighton confirming their first domestic crown since 2016 after a ten-season gap.

Third in the table, Arsenal aimed to recover from European elimination by Lyon on Saturday and to stretch the contest by banking three points at Brighton—the first of three extra fixtures they held over City’s completed slate. Head coach Renee Slegers understood that only a win would suffice, but the London side could not force a second goal after Frida Maanum equalised in the 62nd minute, answering Fuka Tsunoda’s earlier breakthrough for the hosts.

The shared points closed out Arsenal’s bid for the trophy and halted Chelsea’s stretch of six successive league titles. The silverware also lands in Andree Jeglertz’s opening campaign on the City bench.

“Helping guide this team to the WSL title is something I will never forget,” said Jeglertz. “The girls have met every challenge in front of them head on and have been an absolute joy to coach this season. “In the good moments and the bad, they’ve always stuck together and found a way to win — something that all great champions do.”
