Six vendors in Manchester have been charged under the Towns and Communities Act after police moved on roadside selling along Winston Jones Highway in Mandeville on Thursday. Officers also issued warnings to five additional vendors during the exercise.
The Jamaica Constabulary Force said the action is part of a wider push to bring order back to Mandeville and nearby communities. According to police, vending had spread around the Williamsfield and New Green roundabouts and was slowing vehicles using the area.
A senior police source said some sellers had been stepping onto Winston Jones Highway in the path of moving vehicles, creating a danger that authorities wanted to reduce.
Police are calling on vendors to sell from the Mandeville Market instead and to comply with health and safety rules. The operation involved Manchester Municipal police, the Area Three Agricultural Protection Branch and the Manchester police.
