Transport Ministry cites inherited toll contracts as it presses operators for cheaper rates
Jamaica’s administration maintains that the latest rises in highway toll charges stem from legal duties written into multi-year deals struck under an earlier government. Those agreements require charges to move each year in line with the United States Consumer Price Index and the Jamaican dollar’s value against the US dollar.
Transport Minister Daryl Vaz said the state must keep those commitments, yet it has opened talks with the private concessionaires to find cheaper arrangements for road users.
The government also reported that it secured tighter price ceilings and a stronger share of revenue on the May Pen to Williamsfield stretch, steps it says are meant to shield the public from steep fees on newer roads.
