New Ticketing Booth Coming to Carder Park in Portland Labour Day Project
Carder Park in Portland is set to receive a new ticketing booth following a Labour Day project carried out on May 25 by the Portland Municipal Corporation, with support from community groups and other organisations.
Work started from about 7:30 a.m., despite rainy conditions. Among the volunteers were Portland Municipal Corporation staff, contestants in the Miss Portland Festival Queen Competition, and personnel from the Social Development Commission. Along with helping on the booth, the teams also carried out other improvement works around the property.
Karl Coke, Parish Manager for SDC Portland, told JIS News that the booth is important because of the role Carder Park plays in local sport. “Carder Park is really the sporting mecca in Portland. This is a premier sporting location [and] whenever we have events at this location, we tend to be fully subscribed. So, this ticketing area will help to ease the congestion because we normally use a gate and we normally have congestion,” Mr. Coke said.
He also noted that the park sits close to the main road, making crowd and traffic build-up a safety concern. “It’s a safety precaution to keep persons off the main, because we’re on the main right here. So, the ticketing area will, one, ease congestion and two, make the sporting experience for persons coming to Carder Park a lot easier and a lot more pleasurable,” the Parish Manager emphasised.
Once finished, the booth will measure 10 by 10 feet and will be able to hold up to three operators. The structure is to include deck roofing, a hand-washing sink, lights, outlets and other electrical fittings.
The undertaking supports the theme of this year’s Labour Day activities, which is focused on restoring sports and community facilities.
