NWA Moves To Ease Lucea Flooding As Hanover Road Collapse Disrupts Travel

Works minister Robert Nesta Morgan has ordered the National Works Agency to act quickly to reduce flooding in Lucea, Hanover.
The directive followed steady rain across the previous 24 hours, which caused the Riley River to spill onto the main route serving the parish capital.
According to the NWA, its technical officers found that large amounts of bamboo lodged before and under the bridge helped to worsen the flooding.
The agency said crews would begin clearing debris from the bridge area at once, with the blockages to be removed as fast as possible while protecting workers and the public.
Heavy showers have affected sections of western Jamaica, including Hanover, during the past week.
The NWA also reported rain-related damage to parish infrastructure, saying part of the Green Island to Glasgow main road gave way on Thursday night during heavy rainfall.
Because of that breakaway, drivers cannot use the roadway through Kendal.
Morgan has further instructed the NWA to assess conditions along the corridor and consider short-term repairs that could allow the road to reopen.
Residents are facing added difficulty because they must now travel the much longer route through Riley, Kingsvale and Prospect.
