US Supreme Court Affirms Birthright Citizenship in Setback for Trump Immigration Push

1 min read

The United States Supreme Court has held that children born within the country's borders acquire citizenship at birth under the Fourteenth Amendment, dismissing moves to roll back the long-established constitutional protection.

In a six-to-three vote, the justices determined that infants whose parents are in the United States without lawful status or on temporary visas are citizens from the moment of birth.

The decision represents a notable reversal for President Donald Trump's immigration programme, after he moved to narrow birthright citizenship through an executive order.

Civil rights organisations applauded the ruling. President Trump said he would keep seeking changes through legislation.
