Omarie Mears elected Jamaica Weightlifting Federation president amid governance dispute

Overseas-based national weightlifter Omarie Mears has reportedly been chosen to lead the Jamaica Weightlifting Federation, following elections held earlier this week under the oversight of the Jamaica Olympic Association.

The reported vote took place despite objections from incumbent president Dr Mark Broomfield, who has led the federation since January 2020, when it was formally restored after being inactive for 25 years.

In April, Broomfield questioned the JOA’s role in the federation’s affairs during an exclusive interview with TVJ Sports. He raised concerns about what he described as attempts to remove his executive.

Broomfield also alleged that the JOA was backing athletes and coaches who wanted a new leadership team installed. Those pushing for change cited governance concerns, including the absence of elections.

Responding in writing to questions from TVJ Sports, JOA president Christopher Samuda said the umbrella body’s involvement was aimed at finding consensus and bringing the opposing sides together.

TVJ Sports further reported that Broomfield may pursue legal action over the matter.
