Operation Iron Shield pushed to drive Jamaica murders under 120

Police have intensified efforts under Operation Iron Shield in a bid to bring Jamaica’s murder total below 120 for the year, after an internal review showed stronger action would be needed to hit that mark.

Officials said the country is currently recording 28 fewer murders than at the corresponding point last year. The social target, however, remains to close out with fewer than 120 killings — the mandate set for year four.

After assessing performance, police concluded that staying on the present course would not be enough. They returned to planning and launched Operation Iron Shield, built around suppression, tighter performance management, and prevention. Prevention, they said, means reclaiming the streets and dominating public spaces, particularly in hotspot communities.

Authorities report notable results from the stepped-up approach. With the numbers moving in a favourable direction, they expressed confidence that sustained intensification will allow Jamaica to finish the year under the 120-murder ceiling.
