Opposition raises alarm over police fatal shootings in Jamaica
Mr Golding has renewed the Opposition’s concern about the level of fatal shootings involving the police, citing figures from the Independent Commission of Investigations, INDECOM.
According to INDECOM, 153 fatal police shootings have been recorded since the start of the year. The agency’s figures also show that 14 such deaths have occurred so far in June.
Golding said the Opposition was especially troubled by what he described as 11 fatal police shootings within just over 24 hours.
He said the Opposition continues to support the use of body-worn cameras during special police operations. In his view, Jamaica must put stronger measures in place to give the public confidence that the use of extreme or deadly force by the police is properly accounted for.
Golding added that public unease is growing as fatal police shootings remain at a high level, while there appears to be no clear system ensuring accountability.
