Golding Calls For Accountability After 11 Police Fatal Shootings Across Jamaica

1 min readClarendon

Opposition Leader Mark Golding has voiced concern after police fatally shot 11 men over a single 24-hour span.

The killings happened in separate alleged clashes involving lawmen in Clarendon, St. Catherine, St. Andrew and St. James. The incidents, reported on Tuesday and yesterday, comprised two cases in which four men were killed, along with three other fatal shootings involving one man each.

Addressing Parliament yesterday, Golding said he was not in a position to speak on the details of the individual cases. However, he said the number of deaths in such a brief window was deeply troubling.

Golding said the Ministry of National Security must put measures in place to strengthen accountability when police use extreme force. He added that, as fatal shootings rise, relatives and communities are left waiting a long time for the outcome of Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) probes.
