Over 105 young players open Jamaica Basketball Association Star Search camp at G.C. Foster College

More than 105 basketball prospects from across Jamaica have gathered at G.C. Foster College for the 25th staging of the Jamaica Basketball Association’s Star Search and Life Skills Development Camp.

The annual programme aims to identify and develop young players. Over the years, several participants have earned scholarships through overseas coaches and scouts who attend the camp.

After the opening day, Overtime Elite coach Daniel Gayle said he had already noticed encouraging signs among the group.

“We got a lot of campers out here. Mixed abilities. Um some some really good hard workers. Uh so, I'm looking forward to seeing what the week brings. I haven't seen enough to give a honest opinion. Um I see some some glimmers, but um in a camp this size and in the speed in which it was going this morning, um it was difficult to kind of give a good assessment, but um I see some good stuff already,” Gayle said.

Jamaica Basketball Association president Paulton Gordon said the coaching presence at this year’s camp strengthens the outlook for players on display.

“We have um 15 or 15 to 18 coaches this year. Um most of them are local this year. Uh we have a couple overseas coaches who are looking around for talent. But the good thing about that, they have a base of colleges overseas that they have a relationship with. So, in terms of spreading the word, in terms of any talent that is identified, uh we are they are on point as a place to that,” Gordon said.

The camp closes on Friday with an awards presentation.
