The man identified by police as the Papine Market shooting suspect has died while receiving treatment at hospital under police guard.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Michael Phipps, head of Area 4, confirmed on Tuesday that the suspect, known by the alias “Crampy,” died on Monday following the deadly incident that shocked vendors and residents in St. Andrew.
Colleen Bernard, a market manager and former employee of the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC), was fatally shot at Papine Market last Friday afternoon.
Reports indicate that about 3:50 p.m., Bernard was carrying out duties related to the collection of market fees when she was attacked and shot several times by the assailant.
The Papine Market shooting drew widespread concern due to the busy location of the market, which is situated near the University of Technology, Jamaica and the University of the West Indies, Mona campus.
ACP Phipps said the police will continue to strengthen their presence in and around the market district as investigations continue.
